Program Introduction

As economist Ma Yinchu once said: "Scholars cannot study without statistics, entrepreneurs cannot practice without statistics, and politicians cannot govern without statistics..." With the continuous development of China's market economy, the thinking, theories, and methods of economic statistics have been widely applied in various fields, becoming indispensable tools for governments, enterprises, and research institutions.

The Statistics major primarily involves using probability theory to establish mathematical models, collecting observed data, performing quantitative analysis, summarizing, and making inferences and predictions to provide a basis and reference for relevant decision-making. 

It is widely applied across many disciplines, from physics, chemistry, biomedical sciences, social sciences, and humanities, to industrial and commercial decision-making as well as governmental policy-making. With the accelerating progress of artificial intelligence, robotics, and digitalization, there is an increasing desire to extract patterns from vast amounts of data to support decision-making.

Training Objectives

This program aims to cultivate interdisciplinary talents in economic statistics, requiring students to master both related economic theories and statistical tools and methods, and be capable of applying the statistical methods learned to solve real-world economic and social problems.

Specifically, the program aims to train:

  1. Professional talents who can adapt to the needs of socialist market economy and information-based society, with comprehensive development in morality, intellect, physical fitness, aesthetics, and a solid foundation in economic management, mathematics, and economic statistics.

  2. High-quality professionals who master modern statistical techniques and quantitative analysis methods, have strong computer application skills, and possess the ability to discover, analyze, and solve problems.

  3. Talents with high-level abilities in statistical surveys, data mining, market forecasting, and economic accounting.

  4. Talents capable of engaging in quantitative analysis work in financial institutions, business enterprises, and government departments.

  5. High-level professional talents with potential as data analysts in the context of the big data era.

Graduation Requirements

According to the national standards for teaching quality in economics programs, combined with the training objectives of this program, students should meet the following knowledge, ability, and quality requirements upon graduation:

(1) Knowledge Requirements

  1. Master the basic principles of political theory and relevant legal knowledge closely related to economic management;

  2. Proficient in one foreign language and computer information technology applications, capable of using modern information technology and databases for literature retrieval, data processing, model design, research analysis, and thesis writing;

  3. Have comprehensive mathematics knowledge and a solid mathematical foundation, able to use mathematical methods to understand and analyze economic issues;

  4. Firmly grasp the basic knowledge, fundamental theories, and basic application skills of economic statistics, and understand the intrinsic connections between economic operation rules and economic indicators;

  5. Familiar with knowledge of physical health, literature, culture and history, natural sciences, management, law, and engineering sciences.

(2) Ability Requirements

6. Strong skills in listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translation in foreign languages, as well as Chinese writing and expression; good communication, coordination, and teamwork abilities;
7. Ability to independently learn, think critically, and continuously acquire new knowledge, theories, and technologies; creativity in scientific research and entrepreneurial practice;
8. Ability to integrate professional theories and knowledge to analyze and solve problems comprehensively.
