Marine Engineering is an applied discipline based on subjects such as engineering mechanics, mechanical design, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, electrical engineering, etc. This major primarily trains specialists who possess theoretical knowledge and practical skills in modern ship power devices, electrical equipment, and auxiliary machinery. Graduates can work in shipbuilding, ship repair, shipping industries, and engage in the design, manufacturing, installation, commissioning, maintenance, and operational management of ship power devices.

Training Objectives

This major aims to train specialists who meet the strategic needs of the national maritime power, possess good social responsibility, professional ethics, humanistic qualities, and scientific engineering qualities. Graduates will master basic theoretical knowledge of ship power, ship electrical systems, and automation control, and have modern ship engine management capabilities. They can work in the maintenance and management of ocean-going ships, repair and inspection, scientific research in marine engineering and transportation engineering, ship supervision and construction, and technical services. Graduates will meet international seafarer competency standards, possess second/third engineer qualifications for sea-going vessels, and have international competitiveness. The major expects graduates to achieve the following goals five years after graduation:

  1. Possess patriotism, international vision, good social responsibility, humanistic and social science qualities, and professional ethics;
  2. Be competent in positions related to engine management, technical services, and scientific research in marine engineering and transportation engineering, demonstrating innovation in work practice;
  3. Combine work needs, face challenges of ship large-scale, intelligence, and autonomy development, master advanced ship management and manufacturing technology, and shipping enterprise management methods, becoming senior management personnel in the shipping industry;

Graduation Requirements

Graduates should master the following knowledge and skills:

  1. Engineering Knowledge: Possess the mathematical, natural science, engineering foundation, and professional knowledge required to work in marine engineering and transportation engineering, and apply them to solve complex engineering problems in related fields;
  2. Problem Analysis: Apply basic principles of mathematics, natural science, engineering science, and professional knowledge, conduct literature research, identify, express, and analyze complex engineering problems in marine engineering and transportation engineering to obtain effective conclusions;
  3. Solution Design: Design solutions for complex engineering problems related to marine engineering and transportation engineering, conduct ship piping process design, ship electrical control circuit design, and demonstrate innovation in design and development stages, considering social, health, safety, legal, cultural, and environmental factors;
  4. Research: Apply basic theories and technical means of marine engineering and electrical control to research complex engineering problems in related fields, including designing experiments, analyzing and interpreting data, and obtaining reasonable and effective conclusions through result discussion;
  5. Tool Usage: Select modern engineering development tools and information technology tools to design ship piping processes, ship electrical control circuits, use system software for modern ship management, and understand their limitations;
  6. Engineering and Society: Reasonably analyze and evaluate the impact of engineering practice and complex engineering problem solutions in marine engineering and transportation engineering on society, health, safety, legal, and cultural aspects, and understand the responsibilities to be undertaken;
  7. Environment and Sustainable Development: Establish sustainable development engineering concepts, understand and evaluate the impact of engineering practice on the environment and social sustainable development in marine engineering and transportation engineering;
  8. Professional Norms: Possess humanistic and social science qualities, social responsibility, and moral sentiments, understand and comply with engineering professional ethics and norms in engineering practice, and fulfill responsibilities;
  9. Individual and Team: Have organizational management ability, expression ability, interpersonal communication ability, and teamwork ability, can play the role of individual, team member, and leader in a multidisciplinary team;
  10. Communication: Effectively communicate and exchange complex engineering problems related to marine engineering and transportation engineering with industry management service agencies, peers, and the public, including writing ship management reports and documents, making presentations, clearly expressing or responding to instructions.
