Communication Major
Among the majors in the Journalism and Communication group, Communication has become an extremely "hot" major in China in recent years. The number of Chinese students and international students applying to study this major in China is very high. Now, let's explore with Laizhongliuxue what the Communication major is that attracts so many students to choose it.
What is the Communication major?
The Communication major is a field of study that researches communication activities through a collection of various perspectives and methodologies.
The Communication major studies all human communication behaviors and the process of communication occurrence, also known as the laws of development and knowledge of the distribution of human and social relationships. It is a field that studies social information systems and their operational laws.
To make it easier to understand, the Communication major studies how humans use symbols to convey social information. The focus and perspective of the Communication major is on how to establish solid relationships between people through the role of communication.
Distinguishing between the Communication major (传播学) and the Multimedia Communication major (新媒体)?
The reason I mention this issue is that, from my understanding, many of you wish to study Communication abroad in China but confuse the two majors: Communication and Multimedia Communication.
While the Communication major primarily researches theories and observes social phenomena influenced by communication, the Multimedia Communication major focuses on creating communication products like music videos, TV commercials, etc., using graphic software, filming tools, cameras, communication channels, etc.
The curricula of these two majors are different, so please research carefully!
Career Opportunities
After understanding what the Communication major is, surely what you care about most is what jobs you can do after graduation, right?
Typically, Communication graduates mainly work in the following five main fields:
-
Traditional Media: writing content for newspaper offices, magazines, television stations such as People's Daily, Beijing News, CCTV, 21st Century Youth Daily, etc.; editing and archiving broadcast programs; producing diverse television programs at famous satellite TV stations in Hunan, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, etc.
-
Public Relations, Advertising, Marketing: working in advertising and marketing companies on tasks like event organization, reviewing various media websites, etc., or working in the public relations and sales departments of companies like Sohu.
-
Commercial Companies, Internet Companies: operating content for high-end products, managing core content for internet companies like Meituan, Didi; operating platform content for giant internet companies like BAT.
-
Freelance Communication for Celebrities: those with good content creation skills, who accurately and timely grasp today's Internet era and market well can become freelance communication managers for movie stars, singers, online celebrities.
-
Teaching, Research: Teaching the Communication major or related fields at universities, or researching social issues related to communication.
Suitable Candidates
To work in this field, you need to have the following skills:
-
Information Search, Analysis, and Synthesis Skills: This is a very important and indispensable skill because Communication is a theory-oriented major, researching communication issues, requiring you to read many books and materials to write theses and conduct research work.
-
Proficiency in Foreign Languages: If you are not proficient in foreign languages, it is very difficult to find materials for your research scope in this major because not all materials are translated into your language. Imagine studying abroad in China but not being proficient in both Chinese and English, while Communication students are required to read many books per week—it would be a nightmare, right?
-
Outgoing, Lively Personality: Some of you pursuing jobs like PR, advertising, marketing, or freelance communication must build broad relationships with partners and clients to promote their products.
-
Writing and Creativity Skills: Although not highly required, to do communication well, sometimes speaking is not enough; you must also know how to write engaging and attractive content to attract viewers; or creating impressive TV shows also requires creativity. Additionally, you must use your writing skills to write essays and research papers.
-
Management and Problem-Solving Skills: For a TV show, event, or website content to operate effectively, you need management skills, comprehensive observation, and know how to run them. Furthermore, you must have timely response measures for arising problems.
-
Passion: The main purpose of the Communication major is still research, so you must have a passion for the field to endure these dry research tasks.
